This Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28, Ronny Joe Grooms will host a special edition of the Morning Show, filled with reflections, gratitude, and the honoring of Indigenous culture.
The show will begin at 8:05 AM with the Curly & Curlier Kidโs Show, a fun sing-along segment for kids on their way to school. But the heart of this broadcast will come as Ronny Joe delves into more profound reflections on the Thanksgiving holiday, honoring those who are often overlooked.
At 8:20 AM, Ronny Joe will share reflections from KPFAโs live broadcast of the Indigenous Peoples Thanksgiving Sunrise Gathering on Alcatraz Island. This gathering, which has been broadcast annually, is an important tradition that honors Indigenous resilience, culture, and history. From 5 AM to 8 AM, listeners hear prayers, songs, and stories, offering a space for reflection and a reminder of Indigenous peoplesโ struggles. Ronny Joe will set the tone for the day, acknowledging the significance of this gathering and the resilience of Native peoples.
At 9:00 AM, Ronny Joe will be joined by Joe Webber, a member of the Big Valley Tribe and a cultural practitioner, dancer, singer, activist, and Tule Boat instructor. Joe, who has been deeply involved with his community for over 23 years, will discuss his Thanksgiving Day prayer offering in Sonoma, honoring his Native ancestors. Heโll reflect on their history and how he continues to pass on the traditions to younger generations. Joeโs prayer, which he offers every year, acknowledges and honors his ancestors, who are often forgotten by society. Heโll also discuss the importance of remembering and uplifting Native voices in times of celebration and throughout the year.
As always, at 9:40 AM, Lin Marie Devincent will join us for the Valley Poet on the Beat segment. This week, Lin will share poetry and prose on gratitude, focusing on the power of a grateful heart even during challenging times. Lin will remind us how gratitude can be a tool for healing and strength.
This particular Thanksgiving broadcast will bring listeners a unique opportunity to honor Native voices, reflect on the meaning of Thanksgiving, and celebrate the power of gratitude in the community.
